Masatoshi MASANOBU is one of remarkable artist of Gutai Art Association and participated in all Gutai exhibitions from 1955 to 1968. But there would be unfortunately a feeling to which his name and his painting are almost forgotten even among the people related to the art. Certainly the artists using physical expression by their action and performance, etc. are well known on public today as ones of Gutai. However, MASANOBU is near the age of Jiro Yoshihara the leader of Gutai Art Association and he had enough career for artist in 1950s. Therefore, it would be thought that the directionality of his own art had already been forming in when Gutai Art Association was published, and he involved with Jiro Yoshihara in a standpoint different from other young artists. Even the paintings in the middle of 50s are worth the surprise of the freshness and the elaborateness.
This exhibition curated by Mizuho KATOH (a chief curator of Ashiya City Museum of Art and History) becomes a opportunity to introduce the important large scale paintings around 60s of unknown Gutai artist Masatoshi MASANOBU". Also we hope you got a new understanding of him and his art would reevaluate. Moreover, his one-man exhibition of such a large scale is after an interval of about 45 years since at Gutai Pinacotheca in 1965. |
